Following the qualification round, top-ranking archers and teams advance to the Elimination Round (Babak Eliminasi). In this single-elimination knockout phase, participants compete head-to-head in matchplay trees until the gold, silver, and bronze medalists are determined.

1. What is an Elimination Bracket?

An elimination bracket is a tournament tree structure where winners of each head-to-head match advance to the next round, while defeated participants are eliminated from contention (except semifinal losers, who advance to the Bronze Medal match).

2. Selecting Bracket Size (4, 8, 16, 32, 64)

In accordance with World Archery standards, bracket capacities are always powers of two:

  • Top 4 (Semifinals): Suitable for small categories with 4 to 7 participants.
  • Top 8 (Quarterfinals): Common for regional team and individual divisions (8 to 15 archers).
  • Top 16 (Round of 16): Standard for medium-sized provincial championships (16 to 31 archers).
  • Top 32 / Top 64: Used in major national open championships with large participant rosters.

In Archeris, the system automatically suggests the optimal bracket size based on the number of scored qualification participants, while allowing organizers to choose a smaller cutoff if desired (e.g. cut to Top 16 even if 24 archers participated).

3. Qualification Seeding Placement

Brackets are structured symmetrically to ensure that the top-ranked archers do not meet until the final stages of the championship:

  • Top Half of Bracket: Seed 1 is placed at the very top; Seed 4 is positioned at the bottom of the upper half.
  • Bottom Half of Bracket: Seed 2 is placed at the very bottom; Seed 3 is positioned at the top of the lower half.
  • Opening Matches: Seed 1 faces the lowest seed (e.g. Seed 1 vs Seed 16 in a 16-bracket; Seed 2 vs Seed 15; Seed 3 vs Seed 14; Seed 4 vs Seed 13).

This symmetric seeding structure means the two best qualifiers can only meet in the gold medal final — rewarding top performance in the qualification round with the most favorable path through the bracket.

4. Automatic Bye Allocations

When the number of qualified participants is fewer than the bracket size (for example, 12 participants in a 16-bracket):

  • The top-ranked seeds (Seeds 1, 2, 3, and 4) are awarded an automatic Bye in the first round.
  • An athlete with a Bye automatically advances directly to the Quarterfinals without shooting a first-round match.
  • Archeris computes bye allocations automatically based on World Archery bracket position templates.

Byes are always awarded to the highest-ranked seeds — this is by design. The archer who performed best in qualification earns the easiest path through the early rounds as a competitive reward.

5. Step-by-Step Bracket Generation

To generate an elimination bracket in the organizer workspace:

  1. Ensure the category's qualification session is completed and scores are finalized.
  2. Navigate to Organizer Dashboard > Elimination > Bracket Management.
  3. Click + Create Bracket.
  4. Select the competition category (e.g. Recurve Men U-18).
  5. Choose the Bracket Size and Match Format (Set System or Cumulative).
  6. Click Generate Bracket Tree. The interactive matchplay tree is built instantly with seeded athlete names and club badges.

Once generated, the bracket is immediately visible on the public tournament page and updates live as matches are scored.

6. Team Elimination Bracket Setup

For Team and Mixed Team brackets, organizers must run Team Synchronization first to compile composite team rankings. Once synchronized, team brackets follow the identical bracket size and bye allocation rules.
